Jetsam / Gummo

For today’s review, we have an elegant split with Canadian Jetsam and French Gummo. Both bands are a bit complicated with their genres, but both well extreme and loud… Let’s dig deeper into the noise, I bet we’ll find something interesting!

The first on the line are Jetsam (which are new for me). The first thing you hear is a well-played and strangely distorted guitar sound, nice simple riffing, and a sweet heavy crunchy sound (it really has a bass guitar sound). I think this noise fits more into powerviolence subgenre… Can’t say that guys used a lot of a milestone “stop and play” formula, but anyway this music more closer to pv. The second strong part of this mess is the drum section, these beats are cool. However, the vocals here are very specific, especially clear style… it sounds very light and reminds me of some modern hardcore/punk bands. Guys also used some metal elements, and melodic riffs, which helped to create a dark atmosphere… Anyway it was an interesting discovery…

The last but not the worst Gummo, a heavy artillery of this split. These grind-violence guys know how to kick arse! Yes, this is a modern view of the genre (you can call it a false grind but who cares?)… I think the most outstanding thing in the music of Gummo is the guitar tone. A buzzing, low and weird… somewhere between guitar and bass sound. Next is the energy that every song consists of, that shit rippss! Grindcore speed, some beatdowns here and there, and voilà! The result of long days in the studio sound freaking good!
