Barren / VomitSpell

Due to some circumstances, I got this release with a big delay. The label managed to create a true eye candy, I bet that all fans of physical release drooling on it. This split is the first in the Noxious Ruin rec “Grindbox” series. “Every tape comes inside of a beautifully laser-etched tin box, perfectly sized for all kinds of delinquent goods that grinders enjoy. It also includes a fully screenprinted maltese foldout cover, a double-sided 8×10 insert on an opaque clear cassette shell”. Cool isn’t it? I love it when people make not just regular stuff, this is more like art… For obvious reasons, this tape was sold out very fast, but anyway, I want to pay my respects to this work.

Belgian grinders Barren perform with 6 new songs. Same as the first release, guys are bringing their “Chainsaw Grind” right into the minds of the fans. I can’t say that the philosophy of this band changed since then… I can perfectly recognize the same style of the sharp and fast riffs, great, a bit metallic, sound, and same savage energy. The shape of this noise is a bit different from the classical grindcore meaning, but that is exactly what I love in these guys. This music is relatively catchy in a basic way and good to bang your head. Great stuff as always!

VomitSpell always wanted to create something old-school, and this time they outdid themselves. This deathgrind has something slimy, and smelly… I`m talking about that portion of the proto-thrash/black metal… that small addition helped to make everything more outstanding.  A buzz-saw guitar tearing the listener’s ears apart, low bass makes a good support. The guys also perfectly chose the drum sound (I love how snare and bass drums work and sound together, especially on fast parts) and vocal style… this bloody mess will bring you into the late 80th, haha! And yeah, this material has its own charisma and atmosphere!

Remember guys, in such shitty times, we need to keep the underground music scene strong and alive and support the bands, labels, fest, and artists!
