Last week I reviewed a gorenoise album. Well, fuck it – might as well review a hardcore /powerviolence one too!
Always Never Fun is the kind of band where followers know what to expect, but also know the end result will be twisted. These Italian punks have been active since 2012. I don’t know if 6 years is enough time for thinking about doing a compilation, but here we are – 12” black vinyl and 29 tracks of fast and aggressive material. You will hear all songs from their debut album, split with Australian PowerXChuck, and few great compilations. The first thing that caught my eyes is a nice combination of yellow and black colors. Rødel records even pressed all that noise in piss-yellow vinyl and altogether everything looks really badass… But does it sound as cool as it looks?
Well… the production is very nice. It’s clean but without fake plastic sound (personally, I prefer a little bit dirtier sound). The riffs are well served, guitar has a nice tone, and the bass has a lovely metal clanging sound, with the drummer making a solid blast and polka beats. The pissed off vocals are the final cherry on the cake that makes this bunch of tracks as good as it is. I don’t know why but I feel strong touch of skateboarding culture. This fast yelling music is a perfect soundtrack for long ride among dirty streets that are covered with nasty graffiti, haha!
The only reason why this LP is not a classic is that it just lacks the X-factor that bands like Charles Bronson or Spazz do have. But that does not mean that this compilation isn’t worthy of listening.
