It’s been a while since I’ve sat down to review a cassette, so it’s time to fix that! Whammer is a perfect candidate for this mission. This band is new but, the band members have a lot of experience. This squad features members of Doperunner, Grunt & Abberant, familiar names, right?)
This self-titled work contains only 4 songs, that’s not much but we have what we have. However this band differs from the aforementioned bands, I guess I can say that Whammer get their roots from old school Metal/Punk and Grind. You can even look at the cover art and see there’s some cool evil and rotten remains that can easily fit a moldy Death Metal demo tape from the 90’s, haha! I’m glad these guys used that character, with this art this tape looks authentic.
Everything opens with the song “I Live To Bleed”. This beginner will give you an understanding of the bands concepts. The riffing is killer, pretty simple, with a small raw Punkish edge in few places and those Polka/D-beats are just adorable. My favorite one is “Flesh is Commodity” though, absolutely fuckin pumping Metal/Punk with Doomy tones. You may catch here some Thrash/Death Metal and Crust moments, but when the band throws so many ingredients into a pot, that makes the sound of their music more interesting. I must say I really like these four songs from Whammer! The production of this tape is just great, very powerful, energetic, just the way I like it. I believe this is one of those records where the whole is bigger than the sum of its parts.
I know there’ve been dozens of bands recently, which played or are trying to play a similar old school style of noise and many of them are worth a listen. But today is a definitely great discovery for all fans of extreme music.
