I unexpectedly received a package in the mail the other day that came all the way from the UK. I opened it up to find 2 copies of the newest Sewer Trench album, Optimism, within the parcel. This band was foreign to me in all sense of the word. I’d never heard of them, nor heard them mentioned but I decided to dive right in.
I must say, the cover art is high quality and absolutely grotesque! It depicts what I assume is a miasma of corpses from animals and humans alike. It clearly set’s the tone for what this album is all about.
The Album opens with some absolutely filthy guitar riffs and drums that set the somber atmosphere perfectly, only to quickly change pace and become a D-beat fueled massacre. Without skipping a beat, song 2 kicks off with more high speed D-beat goodness and some nasty vocals. Each song seems to be more and more pissed off than the last, as the album continues, the relentlessness never ceases. The third track opens with what is clearly a nod to Old School Punk with that classy Punk Beat that finds it’s way into so many songs these days. Despite being labeled as a Blackened Crust Band, there’s far more Crust filth here than there is Black Metal.
I have to say, I was certainly surprised by the outcome of receiving a random parcel. This band did not disappoint in the slightest. I certainly recommend you pick up a copy of Optimism and any other albums these guys have, it’s worth it.
